Please provide a brief description of your teaching philosophy
I believe in combining lectures with class discussions. I give quizzes on the reading assignments to ensure that students are doing the work. I also require students to make oral presentations when they submit their written research papers. Most important of all, however, are the copy-critique sessions I conduct with my students to recommend ways for them to improve their writing ability, a major weakness in most undergraduates nowadaysWhat do you enjoy most about teaching at Poly?
Seeing student writing skills improve as the term progresses and, of course, serving as faculty adviser to a cadre of dedicated reporters and editors who work diligently to turn out the campus newspaper, which, like many college papers throughout the country today, is totally independent and therefore self-funded.Aside from textbooks, what other reading material would you recommend to your students?
By all means, the major newspapers—the Times, WSJ, FT and such magazines as the Economist, Time, The New Yorker. Most Poly students, unfortunately, do not read anything other than their textbooks. That is apt to hurt them when they go on job interviews, where mention of topics in the news often comes up.Favorite Activities
