Biography
Gavin is an academic librarian, specifically a reference librarian, by temperament, education and experience. With one exception, his work experience has been in academic or special libraries. He had summer jobs, part time jobs, and a Graduate Assistantship in different library departments. Before joining the Dibner Library, he briefly worked at the NYC branch of the New York State Criminal Court library. He has been at the Dibner Library Januray 1999, where he is currently the librarian for reference and instructional services. Finding information, and helping others to find information, using the resources of an Academic Library, or any available resource, is his specialty.
From a young age, he was drawn to the long ago and far away. He only liked Hollywood and international films made prior to 1965 and once had a vast knowledge of the subject. Same goes for music. As for literature, the dates go even further back. He appreciates literature from the Victorian period stretching all the way back to the ancients.
His existence does not revolve entirely around the study of ancient things, however. He is an enthusiast of backpacking/adventure/eco- style tours and has been out of the country every year since 1990. He especially likes sampling the cuisine of the locals. He is also much interested in new technology, and greatly enjoys using a handheld device, pushing it to its limits for enrichment, productivity and entertainment. And he does enjoy the local and contemporary life in NYC.
