Tutoring Program Overview
The Office of Special Services offers free tutoring for TRIO students to help them with the challenging coursework at Polytechnic Institute of NYU. We help students understand the coursework, increase their confidence in academic subjects, and help them learn independently.
Tutoring is the cornerstone of the TRIO project and critical to the academic success of our students. We offer tutoring in freshman and sophomore-level math, science, and computer science courses as well as some upper-level courses.
Individualized Tutoring
Students will meet on a one-to-one basis with a tutor in the subject(s) they need help with each week for the entire semester. Tutors help students with homework, address their individual difficulties, and help them prepare for exams.
Small-Group Tutoring
We also offer small-group tutoring for selected upper-level courses. Small-group tutoring consists of two to three students who meet with their tutor weekly for the entire semester. Tutors focus on helping students master the subject matter by addressing their weaknesses in the subject and building on individual strengths.
Supplemental Instruction
For additional support, students attending selected courses have the option to meet as a group with a tutor for supplemental instruction. On a weekly basis, the tutor will lead a review session following the class syllabus, answer students’ questions, and go over homework assignments. These sessions provide TRIO students with an excellent opportunity to master the subject matter by strengthening their knowledge of basic concepts.
