The present Power Engineering Group at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU has a long history not only of the teaching of Electric Power, but also of research in the areas of electric power generation, distribution, power electronics, and electromagnetic propulsion.
Many years ago, in the 60's, when interest in space studies and plasmas was at its peak, interest in machinery and in power decreased precipitously. As a result, our electrical machinery textbooks of Liwschitz-Garik, although of world-wide renown, were no longer appropriate. Prof. Enrico Levi (deceased), a student of his, then wrote a text on Electromechanical Power Conversion, which introduced machinery by first discussing plasmas. It was most successful, not only in arousing the interest of students, but also in acquainting them with then-current new ideas, such as magnetohydrodynamic power generation, clearly presented in the text.
Today, Prof. Zivan Zabar wrote a chapter on Electric Drives in the Encyclopedia of Physical Sciences published by Academic Press; and, Prof. Dariusz Czarkowski wrote a book on Resonant Power Converter.
