STUDENT MONTHLY PASSES, RAIL

1. NJ TRANSIT Rail student monthly passes are available to students at a 25% discount off regular rail monthly passes and have the same validity period as regular rail monthly passes. An official application (Form PD-14) is required and can be obtained from the ticket office of the station you will be using.

2. Students entitled to student monthly passes are elementary, secondary, and full-time post-secondary school students who are not gainfully employed and attend school a minimum of 3 days a week, day or evening session. The student must be attending a public school or an accredited private or parochial school in New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania. The student must be acquiring at least 12 credits if attending a college or university.

Graduate students must also be acquiring 12 credits; however, in some graduate programs, students acquiring 9 credits are considered to be full-time students. In such instances, the school must write on the NJ TRANSIT Student Application that taking 9 credits is considered full-time status.

For students attending summer school, the student must be a full-time student attending school a minimum of 3 days a week. There is no minimum number of credits required.

Student interns may purchase a student monthly pass as long as the internship is through the school as part of a program to obtain a degree, it is an unpaid internship, and the school is in New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania. The school must write a letter on its letterhead stating that the internship is a required part of the school program to obtain the student's degree.

3. Authorized schools are listed in a tariff bulletin issued by the Financial Operations and Compliance Department.

4. The student monthly pass is for the personal use of the student who purchased it and is restricted for traveling to/from stations indicated on the pass for the sole purpose of attending school. These tickets are not honored to or from any other rail station but are valid on buses and light rail vehicles as per NJ TRANSIT's cross-honoring policies.

The rail station, printed on the pass (other than the one near the school), is permitted to be a station other than the closest one to the student's home. Example: a student attends a school in Manhattan, lives in Cranford and parks at the Union Station; New York and Union will be printed on the student monthly pass.

5. An NJ TRANSIT official application for student monthly passes, which is valid for four months of transportation requests, must be completed by the student and approved by the school.

6. The student must present the following to the ticket agent when purchasing the student monthly pass:

a. The completed application.
b. Post high school students must present their valid student ID card or receipt for tuition payment.

7. When requested, students must present their student identification card for examination by train crew personnel or other NJ TRANSIT representatives.
