Brooklyn Atlantis — As part of a team of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science majors, Jarred Humphrey (Computer Engineering/Computer Science ‘13) helped build a robotic buoy that takes pictures both above and below the water in Brooklyn’s infamously polluted Gowanus Canal, then transfers the data to an online system. The buoy is nearly completed, and when launched will crowd-source the identification phase of a potential cleanup effort.

Each summer members of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) faculty open up their labs to undergraduates from NYU-Poly, NYU's College of Arts and Sciences and NYU Abu Dhabi for 10 weeks of hands-on research under close mentorship. Students work full time in the lab with a faculty member and also participate in weekly seminars presented by distinguished faculty and guests. Last week, at the program’s end, students presented their projects at the New Student Convocation.
The Summer Research Program was initiated in 2007 by the Office of the Provost. Its success is made possible by the financial support from the Institute’s loyal and generous donors as well as supplements from the research grants of the mentoring faculty.
