Seizure Detection Using Non-Linear Energy Operator — “1% of the population has epilepsy, and 5% has random seizures,” said Fahd Iqbal (Electrical and Computer Engineering ’13), a senior whose summer project focused on the Non-Linear Energy Operator algorithm to detect the spikes in brain activity that occur right before seizures. “We were able to get data from NYU’s Neuroscience Center,” said Iqbal. “You’d never have this kind of exposure in a classroom.”

Each summer members of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) faculty open up their labs to undergraduates from NYU-Poly, NYU's College of Arts and Sciences and NYU Abu Dhabi for 10 weeks of hands-on research under close mentorship. Students work full time in the lab with a faculty member and also participate in weekly seminars presented by distinguished faculty and guests. Last week, at the program’s end, students presented their projects at the New Student Convocation.
The Summer Research Program was initiated in 2007 by the Office of the Provost. Its success is made possible by the financial support from the Institute’s loyal and generous donors as well as supplements from the research grants of the mentoring faculty.
