New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg brought the media to NYU-Poly’s new incubator space at 137 Varick Street to share in the good news: The first city-sponsored business incubator has already sent 12 successful startup companies off to larger spaces, and 10 more are about to “graduate.”
Originally a partnership of NYU-Poly, the city and Trinity Real Estate, the incubator has been so successful that the city opened another 9, including one in DUMBO, which is a partnership with NYU-Poly and Two Trees Management.
NYU-Poly President Jerry M. Hultin pointed to the 50 international delegations that have taken home lessons on innovation and entrepreneurship. The incubator has also nurtured the skills and careers of students, he said: More than a dozen graduates have become full-time employees of the companies of the Varick Street Incubator.
