Today, almost anything is possible with a smart phone. But Zhile Zhao believes there is still unlocked potential in mobile phones. Zhao developed a way to use phones as credit cards by combining SIM cards with smart card technology. His innovation allows individuals to make purchases by holding their phone over a smart card reader and confirming the transaction on screen.

NYU-Poly’s fourth annual Time Warner Cable Inno/Vention Competition drew a record 123 entries from among its own undergraduate and graduate students and — for the first time — teams from nationally recognized high school science programs. The finalist projects were not simply brilliant technical solutions: In keeping with NYU-Poly’s philosophy of i-squared-e — invention, innovation and entrepreneurship — the projects were also subjected to rigorous business analysis.
