Fatalities from structural instabilities during earthquakes are a timely concerns around the world. To meet this challenge, Ismail Paktik created a way to reduce structural damage with his “magnetic shock absorber” architectural design. This design, based on diagonal braces, will give structures the flexibility to withstand the effects of a quake and as a result, help save lives.

NYU-Poly’s fourth annual Time Warner Cable Inno/Vention Competition drew a record 123 entries from among its own undergraduate and graduate students and — for the first time — teams from nationally recognized high school science programs. The finalist projects were not simply brilliant technical solutions: In keeping with NYU-Poly’s philosophy of i-squared-e — invention, innovation and entrepreneurship — the projects were also subjected to rigorous business analysis.
