Frequently Asked Questions

The answers to these questions address the interim state wherein Polytechnic becomes a corporate entity—the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. 


General

Q. What will happen to the Polytechnic name?

A. The name Polytechnic Institute of NYU will be used in the interim and when Poly becomes a school of NYU. 

Q. Will Poly remain in its present location?

A. Polytechnic Institute of NYU will continue to operate its main campus in Brooklyn, and at such other locations where Polytechnic Institute of NYU programs may be delivered. 

Q. Will the benefits remain the same?

A. Polytechnic Institute of NYU will continue to offer its personnel comparable benefits to those currently provided to personnel of Polytechnic; over time they will be aligned with those of NYU. 

Q. What happens to the current endowment?

A. The intentions of past and current donors in their gifts and bequests will be stewarded and administered according to Poly’s practice. The endowment will reside with Polytechnic Institute of NYU and be applied to Poly as donors intended. 

Q. What will happen to Poly's real estate development rights?

A. The real estate development rights will reside with the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. 

Q.How will the merger affect Middle States accreditation? ABET accreditation?

A. Accreditation will be maintained. Details will be worked out in the Transition Plan, but both agencies are working with us to make a smooth transition. 

Q. What will be the status of the current alumni association short term?

A. It is the intent of NYU and Polytechnic that the Polytechnic Alumni Association will continue to operate as the alumni organization of the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. 

Q. What will be the commitment to Poly's heritage and mission: diversity and financial assistance?

A. Both Poly and NYU are committed to long-term stability, capacity and excellence of its student body while honoring its historical commitment to diversity and providing opportunity to high-potential students in need. 


Student

Q. When will degrees indicate NYU?

A. We expect Polytechnic Institute of NYU to appear on our diplomas in the spring of 2008; details are being worked out in the Integration Plan.

Q. Will there be an increase in tuition?

A. Current students and students enrolling in fall 2008 will use Poly’s tuition schedule; over time (five years or so), tuition will be increased to the level of NYU. 

Q. When will students be able to take courses at NYU?

A. Hopefully in the fall of 2008; details are being worked out in the Integration Plan. 

Q. What will happen to the athletic programs?

A. They’ll continue in the current conference (Skyline) for the next 2-3 years; future changes will be part of the Integration Plan. 

Q. Will Poly students be able to transfer into NYU programs?

A. Qualified Poly students will be able to transfer into NYU programs just as qualified NYU students will be able to transfer into Poly programs. The procedure and policies will be set during the next few months. 

Q. When will Poly students have access to the NYU library and other services?

A. The procedure and policies will be set during the next few months. 

Q. What will happen to non-engineering departments?

A. Both NYU and Polytechnic Institute of NYU intend to maintain the current Polytechnic academic departments and programs. Both NYU and Poly intend that Poly departments and programs will have distinctive qualities based on Poly’s role as NYU’s School of Technology and Engineering.
