FACULTY PROFILES

Anne-Laure Fayard - Assistant Professor

Prior to joining Polytechnic, Prof. Fayard spent 6 years at INSEAD, an international business school (on both the European and the Asian campus), where she taught in the MBA and Executive Programs. She holds a BA in Philosophy and an MA in History and Philosophy of Science from La Sorbonne, an MA in Cognitive Science from Ecole Polytechnique, and a PhD in Cognitive Science from Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Her research interests involve socio-technical practices, technology- mediated communication, culture, distance collaboration and space. Her work is based on qualitative and ethnographic methods.

Mel Horwitch - Professor and Chair, Department of Technology Management

Mel Horwitch is Professor of Technology Management and founding Director of the Institute for Technology and Enterprise. He is also Visiting Professor at London Business School.

Previously he was Professor and Founding Dean of Management at Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, serving on the Theseus Board of Directors and Theseus Scientific Advisory Board.

Professor Horwitch has also served on the Faculties of the Sloan School at MIT and Harvard Business School. He was also the John M. Olin Distinguished Fellow at Templeton College, Oxford University and Visiting Professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine. Professor Horwitch was also on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Macro- Engineering Societies and Vice President and Board member of the American Society for Macro-Engineering. He is also a member of the Committee on Industrial Economics of the National Research Council.

He received his AB from Princeton University and MBA and Doctorate from Harvard Business School, and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand.

Professor Horwitch has written extensively on innovation and technology strategy, particularly with reference to such knowledge-intensive sectors as services, information technology, and telecommunications. His publications include Technology in the Modern Corporation: A Strategic Perspective (editor and contributor), Clipped Wings: The American SST Conflict, Energy Future: Report of the Energy Project at the Harvard Business School (contributor), articles published in such journals as Management Science, Policy Science, Sloan Management Review, Technology in Society, and Business Strategy International, and several paper cases and Web-based multimedia cases. His current scholarly interest focuses on digital- based and content innovation.

Jerry MacArthur Hultin - Industry Professor of Law, Management and Public Policy; University President

Jerry MacArthur Hultin is Polytechnic Institute of NYU's 10th President, and was inaugurated in September 2006.

Prior to joining Polytechnic, Dr. Hultin was Dean of the Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management and a professor of management at Stevens Institute of Technology. As dean of the Howe School of Technology Management since 2000, Hultin was responsible for the leadership of Stevens' newest academic school dedicated to producing outstanding education and research that addresses the needs of companies, government and individuals as they manage technology-dependent organizations. Hultin was influential in guiding research on homeland security at Stevens Institute, including serving as principal investigator for a widely-read study on using 'network centric operations' to improve the security of the Port of New York and New Jersey.

From 1997 to 2000, Hultin served as Under Secretary of the Navy, the department's number two civilian leader. He was instrumental in fostering innovation in strategic vision, war fighting and business operations to meet the evolving needs of the Navy and Marine Corps.

Hultin spent more than 25 years in the private sector. His work included the practice of law, the management of small businesses and business consulting in areas of technology, health care, student loan finance and the environment. From 1994 through 1997, he was a partner in Jefferson Partners, an investment banking firm based in Washington, D.C. At the same time, he served as a member of the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel and as a member of the Board of Directors of Freddie Mac, one of the nation's largest holders of housing mortgages.

A former commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, Hultin is a 1964 graduate of Ohio State University and a 1972 graduate of Yale Law School. He is an honorary fellow of the Foreign Policy Association, a member of the NY Transatlantic Council and adviser of business organizations, including a major telecommunications corporation and a global investment banking firm.

Oded Nov - Assistant Professor of Management

Oded Nov is an Assistant Professor of Technology Management. He joined the Faculty in 2004 after receiving his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge. His prior education includes a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a B.A. from Tel Aviv University. His research interests include innovation strategy, knowledge management, and information systems.

Bharat Rao - Associate Professor & Academic Director of PhD-TM program

Bharat Rao is an Associate Professor of Technology Management at Polytechnic Institute of NYU, and Director of the Ph.D. Program in Technology Management. He is also a Research Affiliate at the European Institute of Interdisciplinary Research in Paris. He earned a Ph.D. in Marketing and Strategic Management from The University of Georgia, and received a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology in Calicut, India. Prior to joining Polytechnic, he held a post-doctoral Research Associate position at Harvard Business School in Boston. Recently, he was a visiting faculty researcher at the Center for Advanced Learning Technologies, INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France. From 2002-2004, he was an Othmer Faculty Fellow at Poly.

Dr. Rao's research has examined the impact of information and communications technologies on multiple industries including retailing, logistics and distribution, supply chain management, wireless and broadband innovation, financial services, entertainment and media. His current research focuses on the diffusion of emerging technologies, business model evolution, the integration of multiple technologies for improving business effectiveness, and global innovation strategy. His research has been published in the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Computer Mediated Communications, EM-Electronic Markets, Journal of Media Management, Technology in Society, International Business Review, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and in numerous conference proceedings and book chapters. He is also the author of multiple business case studies which have been published by Harvard Business School Publishing, the Institute for Technology and Enterprise, and the European Case Clearing House. His recent research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, NYSTAR (New York State Science Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research), and the Othmer Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies.

Dr. Rao serves on the Academic Advisory Board of the Harvard-Wharton Merchandising Effectiveness Project, and on the editorial boards of EM-Electronic Markets and the International Journal of Business Data Communications and Networking. He has been an invited speaker at industry and academic events in the US, Europe, India, Israel and Taiwan, and has taught in graduate and executive management programs at Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Harvard Business School, INSEAD, and Tufts University. He has consulted for firms in the areas of electronic commerce, software, financial services, pharmaceuticals, fashion merchandising and also with government agencies and the non-profit sector. He was recently involved in a team advisory capacity in formulating a telecommunications and economic development strategy for New York City, for the Office of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Dr. Rao is also a Member of the Council of Reference of the OPLAN (Open Public Local Access Network) Foundation, an international charitable body founded by the successful British serial entrepreneur Malcolm J. Matson, to educate the public and political leaders on the benefits and emergence of OPLANs and to encourage their further deployment.

George Schillinger - Research Professor

Dr. Schillinger organized Polytechnic's Division of Management and served as its first dean. He has been a member of Polytechnic's faculty since 1957 and has taught courses in management, operations research, and electrical engineering. He developed new courses in technology management, policy analysis, probabilistic systems, and information theory. In 1990 he received the University's Distinguished Teacher Award. He is the author of numerous articles.

As Dean of Interdisciplinary Programs he was responsible for furthering the development of innovative curricula and research involving all disciplines at Polytechnic. Among his priorities were programs dealing with science, technology and policy, including international technology transfer and economic development.

In 1980 he was Distinguished Faculty fellow at the Yale School of Organization and Management. He has been a Visiting Professor at Yale, and developed and taught courses in technology management and policy in both the School of Management and the School of Engineering. He has been a frequent speaker at executive programs for corporations and government agencies, among them IBM, GTE, GE, and the U.S. Army.

Under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Schillinger has served as a consultant to the governments of Cameroon, Indonesia, Pakistan, Portugal, and Thailand. He served as Chairman of a National Research Council delegation to Hungary and India, and as a NRC delegate to meetings with the Academies of Science of Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia. He has served as Chairman of a NAS Advisory Panel on Central Europe, and from 1989 to 1991 served as Chairman of a Panel on Eastern Europe.

In recent years Dr. Schillinger was an invited speaker on educational policies affecting scientific and technical manpower in Argentina, Brazil, Uzbekhistan and the United States, and on the management of technology in Ecuador. In the Fall of 1983 he was Isambard Kingdom Brunel Lecturer on large-scale projects at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Schillinger served as the Executive Director of The American Society for Macro-Engineering, a Vice President of the International Association of Macro-Engineering Societies, and a member of the Board of Directors of both.


Nina Ziv - Industry Associate Professor

Nina Ziv is Academic Director of the Institute for Technology and Enterprise where she is leading the Institute's strategic initiative on media. She is currently conducting a major research study on the transformation of the book publishing industry and on the development of media conglomerates and the issues surrounding the potential convergence/synergies of different businesses within these conglomerates. Dr. Ziv's other research interest is in the area of global entrepreneurship where she is especially focusing on the role small companies play in the development of an industry. Dr Ziv is an Industry Associate Professor in Polytechnic Institute of NYU's Department of Technology Management and also is Co-Director of the Executive Master's Management Degree Programs at Polytechnic. Before joining Polytechnic Institute of NYU, she spent 15 years in the technology industry. She was a Vice President of Technology Strategy and Planning at Merrill Lynch in New York City where she spearheaded many innovative leading-edge technology projects including the development of Merrill's corporate intranet. Dr. Ziv received her PhD from New York University in Applied Linguistics.

Dr. Ziv has been a Guest Lecturer at the London Business School's Executive Program held at Harvard University. She has been an invited speaker at the MIT Research Forum in Tel Aviv, Israel, at Forrester's Research Forum on the Financial Services Industry, and at various academic conferences in Taiwan, Israel, Hawaii and Greece. She has designed and chaired several Institute events including a Round Table on the evolution of the publishing industry held in New York City and Round Tables held in Rehovot, Israel on the managerial challenges facing the emerging biotechnology industry in Israel and the role of the professional manager in an entrepreneurial environment. She co-chaired a unique Round Table and developed curriculum materials on the challenges facing managers in the post-September 11 environment

Dr. Ziv's research on the print media industry and on entrepreneurship has been published by the European Case Clearing House, and the Institute for Technology and Enterprise. Her case study on The Chicago Tribune Interactive will be published in two forthcoming case books on strategic management, and has also been translated into other languages for use by business schools around the world.
