ADMISSION

All Poly Programs
People

This page presents an overview of the admission process. Given the high level of interest in this program, we expect the admissions process to be very competitive.

Part-time versus Full Time Program

We are accepting applications for both part-time and full-time students for the term beginning Fall 2009. The deadline for applications is April 15th, 2009. Courses and seminars are offered on weekday evenings in Brooklyn. There are no scheduled weekend classes. You should indicate which program you are applying to clearly in your application (part-time or full-time).

Admission Guidelines

All interested applicants carefully follow these admission guidelines to ensure that their packages are accurate and complete. The information below is required of ALL students (part-time or full-time). Incomplete applications will not be considered for evaluation.

Applicants should send the following documentation by the appropriate deadline before their packages can be evaluated by the Admissions Committee:

  1. A completed Application for Graduate Admission
  2. A record of academic achievements as evidenced by transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work completed, sent directly from the institutions providing them
  3. Three Letters of recommendation
  4. A valid GRE or GMAT test score. (Note: Students successfully admitted in the program in the past have had GRE/GMAT scores in the top 10-15 percentile). Scores must be sent directly from ETS - Educational Testing Service - copies are not acceptable. Test scores may not be more than five years old at the time of application. Applications without valid GRE or GMAT test scores cannot be considered for this program
  5. A two-page Statement of Purpose that describes in brief a) the applicant's prior background and experience, b) motivation in pursuing doctoral studies, c) long-term career goals, and d) areas or topics of potential research
  6. A research-based writing sample (minimum of 10 pages). This could be a paper or research project you have worked on in the past.
  7. A non-refundable application fee of $55
  8. A completed Declaration and Certification of Finances accompanied by a bank statement is required of all "F" and "J" visa applicants.

Given the interest in this new program offering and constraints on our operational resources, we are unable to answer every individual query about your prior qualifications, eligibility, or financial status. If you would like to be seriously considered for admission to the program, please apply!

International Students

In addition to Items 1 through 7 above, International applicants must also submit TOEFL scores. Test scores may not be more than two years old at the time of application. Note that TOEFL scores are not necessary for applicants whose primary language of instruction in school was English.

Graduates of Polytechnic Institute of NYU

If you are currently graduating from Polytechnic Institute of NYU or are a former graduate, you may be considering applying to this doctoral program. We encourage you to apply but ask you to be aware that we will still need all the application materials from you before we can make a determination of your eligibility. If you are able to satisfy all the admission requirements and complete the application process in time, we would be glad to consider your application. Also see below for information on course waivers.

Graduates with MBA other M.S. level degrees

We get frequent inquiries about course waivers from students who have undertaken prior graduate or doctoral level work. If you have an MBA or MS-Management degree, MOT, TIM (or other advanced graduate degrees), and have obtained high grades in the required course areas, there is a good possibility of these course requirements being waived. However, the admissions committee cannot make this determination unless we have your completed application packet. Therefore, please do not contact us with course specific waiver questions before applying. We will have an opportunity to evaluate those at a later date along with your completed application.

Transfer Students

From time to time, we get requests from students admitted in other programs (including those at other schools) who would like to transfer to the Ph.D-TM program. As a rule, we do not accept transfer students. If you are interested in this program, send in your completed application. If successfully admitted, we can determine what (if any) credits can be transferred.

Assistantships

We are in a position to offer limited financial support to outstanding qualified full-time candidates - note that the process is competitive and it is very important that all your supporting materials are submitted by the admissions deadline. No financial support can be offered to part-time students. Typically, our part-time students are a) financed through personal funds, b) financed through their employers through tuition remission programs, or c) funded through external administered scholarships independent of the university (e.g. through foundations).

Tuition Rates

Sample tuition amounts for 2007-2008 are shown below.

GraduateTuition (Fall 2007 - Spring 2008) $1027 per credit

Graduate Fees (Fall 2007 - Spring 2008)

$1030 for 9+ units

$690 for 6 - 8 units

$365 for 0 - 5 units

Note : Using the above rates, a student taking 9 credits per semester in Fall 2007 (3 courses, each of 3 credits), would pay $10273 that semester ($1027x9 tuition + $1030 fees)

Important Dates

The deadline for receipt of the above information is April 15th 2009 for admission into the program starting in Fall 2009. We will not consider applications received beyond this date. A faculty committee will evaluate applicants to the Ph.D. program based on multiple factors.

Note

Please read the instructions on all forms carefully. They contain all the information you need for submitting your application. Please do not contact departmental personnel or faculty unless warranted by exceptional circumstances.
