ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

B.S. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
B.S. AEROSPACE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)  in Mechanical Engineering. The B.S. degree offers a Concentration in Aerospace Engineering.

Our programs offer students diverse and multidimensional education that addresses fundamental understanding of the underlying mathematics, sciences, and engineering; design methodologies; use of modern simulation and design tools; and extensive laboratories for undergraduate and graduate instruction and research.

Departmental Research:  Departmental faculty and students carry out research in diverse areas such as smart materials, complex dynamical systems, biomimetics,  nanomaterials, energy systems, fire propagation, and bio-fluid mechanics.  The main research in the department in carried out through two laboratories,  the Composite Materials & Mechanics Laboratory and the Dynamical Systems Laboratory, that concentrate on research related to the development, deployment, and utilization of advanced smart materials.

Undergraduate Programs:  The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, with students having the option to pursue a Concentration in Aerospace Mechanical Engineering.  The undergraduate degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (AEC) of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone: (410)347-7700 .

Graduate Programs:  The department offers a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with three areas of concentration: Mechanics and Structural Systems, Controls and Dynamic Systems, and Fluid Dynamics and Thermal Systems.  The department also offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mechanical Engineering with five areas of concentration:  Aerospace, Materials Science, Mechanics and Structural Systems, Controls and Dynamic Systems, and Fluid Dynamics and Thermal Systems.  The doctoral degree is approved by the New York State Doctoral Program Review.

Undergraduate Research Programs:  Mechanical Engineering students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Research Experience for Undergraduate Students Program in which the students work on research programs under the supervision of senior graduate students and faculty.  Typically students work on such research during the summer on a full-time basis, with many continuing their work during the academic year on a part-time basis.

Educational Programs for High-School Students:  The department has provided the unique University-High School Outreach programs developed to enhance High-School student achievement in Active Physics, Marine Science, Regents Living Environment, Regents Physics, and Math-A.

Departmental Advisory Board:  The Department employs the expertise and knowledge of a number of outstanding individuals from the private sector in order to connect its programs to the continuously evolving technological, economic, and social needs of the our region, the country and the world.  The Advisory Board meets frequently to review our programs and provide input on how to improve and expand them.
