Student Leadership Opportunities

One of the goals of NYU-Poly is to teach students how to function effectively in teams, both as leaders and as members. Out-of-the-classroom experience plays a crucial part in the development of this skill. Therefore, students are invited and challenged to live out what they are learning in the classroom. Please consider the following opportunities to gain real-world leadership and team work experience.

Leadership Development

NYU-Poly students have the opportunity to take on a variety of leadership roles, including Peer Educators, New Student Orientation Leaders, and leaders of the 40+ clubs and organizations. Student leaders are instrumental in enhancing the quality of campus life through co-curricular activities such as institutional governance, clubs, organizations, special committees, recreational and cultural endeavors, and the planning and production of special programs.

Peer Educators Program

The Peer Educator Program is a premiere leadership development program on campus comprised of a diverse group of students who are self-motivated, diligent, and academically focused. Peer Educators are students who are inspirational leaders responsible for educating the student body on specific issues related to issues revolving around life on campus. Peer Educators are mentors, leaders, facilitators, role models and student resources. Peer educators are responsible for providing out-of-classroom learning experiences to all students and support various campus activities that are executed and administered by the NYU-Poly Office of Student Activities and Resource Center and partner offices within the institution. Additionally, NYU-Poly Peer Educators are responsible for heightening the awareness of the NYU-Poly Community on various areas related to academic success, community development, multiculturalism, health & wellness, and career development. There are four different types of Peer Educators and each group is lead by a supervisor from a branch within the Division of Student Affairs.

New Student Orientation Leaders

Orientation programs are held on campus at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters for first-year and transfer undergraduate, graduate, and international students.  Orientation Leaders provide incoming students and their families with a personal introduction to NYU-Poly. With enthusiasm and pride, they will highlight school spirit and tradition, academic expectations, and campus life, and promote resources available for student success. Orientation Leaders represent the best of NYU-Poly and demonstrate what being a member of the NYU-Poly learning community is all about. General responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrating enthusiasm, energy, reliability, honesty, teamwork, and punctuality
  • Welcoming new students and their families into the community and assisting them throughout their complete orientation and first semester experience
  • Addressing community expectations and student life issues, and answering participant questions
  • Assisting with check-in, campus tours, student activities, campus life presentations, and evening activities
  • Continuing to serve as a resource for students during welcome activities and throughout the semester

Beginning in 2012, all NYU-Poly Orientation Leaders will also be NYU Welcome Week Leaders! All OLs will partake in helping with the events that takes place in Washington Square and at NYU-Poly during our Fall 2012 Welcome Week! NYU-Poly OL's will join the Welcome Week Team as they support and engage all new NYU-Poly and NYU students to campus!
