Congratulations on your admission to NYU-Poly. New Student Orientation is designed to assist you in your integration into the NYU-Poly community, and introduce you to the broad opportunities available here. New Student Orientation is not a one-time event, but rather a process that progresses throughout the summer and into the school year.
Students are expected to participate in all components of the New Student Orientation program, which include an introduction to academic and student life, and opportunities for new students to interact with faculty, staff, and continuing students. Most important, you will have a chance to meet fellow incoming students and current student leaders, paving the way for friendships that could last a lifetime.
You will receive more in-depth information, including dates and times, about New Student Orientation as you approach your NYU-Poly start date. The information below will help to supplement those communications and prepare for your life as a PolyThinker.
Placement Exams
Once enrolled in NYU-Poly, you will take Diagnostic Placement Exams in math and English to ensure that you are placed in courses that will maximize your ability to succeed during your first semester. These exams are not meant to be stressful — there is no passing or failing. Once your exams are evaluated, your First-Year Advisers will begin building your class schedule. Upon receiving instructions about taking your placement exams, you can contact Undergraduate Admissions at 1-800-POLYTECH with any questions you may have.
New Student Orientation Academic Days
New Student Orientation Academic Days are designed to prepare you for your academic experience at NYU-Poly. You will be provided with the information and tools needed to successfully acclimate to, and become an active member of, the academic community. Programs held on these days are designed to:
- Familiarize you with your intended major;
- Increase your understanding of the first year curriculum and its connection to your academic discipline;
- Familiarize you with critical first year support networks (e.g. Academic Advisement Center, Freshmen Programs, Division of Student Affairs)
- Create a sense of excitement and enthusiasm around the your major, while demystifying any preconceived notions about college life.
These days are informational and interactive so that you can become familiar with the expectations of being a member of the NYU-Poly community. You will have the opportunity to meet and interact with students and faculty in your major, as well as Orientation Leaders and Institute staff.
Orientation Schedule
Typically, New Student Orientation Week follows this schedule:
- New Resident Student Move-in Day
- Day 1: Designed to welcome new students to the NYU-Poly community and introduce them to the various offices, programs and resources on campus
- Day 2: A continuation of Day 1's activities. This day concludes with the New Student Convocation, the official welcome of the new students by the faculty into the academic community.
- Days 3 and 4, Overnight Camp Experience: an overnight retreat in upstate New York that allows new students to meet classmates, administrators, and student leaders in a fun, informal setting
- Day 5, Open Day: Designed for international students to address their particular needs and for all students to take care of business-related issues
Transfer Students
Transfer students arrive at NYU-Poly with a foundation of knowledge about transitioning to higher education. However, we highly encourage transfer students to attend our New Student Orientation Academic Days, so that they can become acclimated to the NYU-Poly community. NOTE: All Transfer students need to take the English and Math Diagnostic Placement Exams (see above).
Family Members
Family members are encouraged to attend and participate in New Student Orientation. You will have the opportunity to learn about NYU-Poly life, meet campus administrators and faculty, and make connections with other NYU-Poly families. You will attend orientation at the same time as your student, but you will have a different schedule of activities.
