Students Transferring to NYU-Poly

I'm a transfer student who has been accepted to NYU-Poly. Are there special steps I need to follow to register and attend classes?

If you are a transfer student from another academic institution in the United States, you must contact the Office of International Students and Scholars at Polytechnic within 10 days of your registration to complete the necessary transfer procedure. At that time you will have to provide OISS with your NYU-Poly issued form I-20 in order to complete the transfer process. If you fail to comply with this procedure you will be in violation of immigration rules.

I am now in the United States on an F-1 visa attending another school and I am transferring to Polytechnic. What do I need to do in order to obtain an I-20 or DS-2019 From Poly?

International students in the United States attending another SEVIS approved educational program admitted to Polytechnic are required to comply with the following procedure in order to receive an I-20/DS-2019 from NYU-Poly:

  • Notify the Office of International Student Office at your current school that you plan to transfer to NYU-Poly
  • Obtain an NYU-Poly Transfer Request Form and ask the International Student Office at your current school to complete this form and return it by fax or mail to the Office of International Students and Scholars
  • Request your current school’s International Student Office to release and transfer your electronic SEVIS record to NYU-Poly. Individuals in the United States who are in B visa status are not eligible to begin their education unless they obtain an F-1 status. Moreover, in most cases, they will not be eligible to apply for a change of status in the United States, but will be required to return to their home country and apply for an F-1 visa status. Once they obtain an F-1 visa, they will be able to return to the United States to begin their degree program at Polytechnic.

How long does it take for the USCIS to process an application for a change of status?

It takes approximately 60- 90 days for the USCIS to process an application for a change of status. You will need to plan very carefully and apply for a change of status early enough to ensure that it is approved before you are actually enroll at Polytechnic.
