Jays off to solid start; down Brooklyn College by 9
Pickell pumps in 22 points to lead Poly
Brooklyn, NY - The NYU-Poly women's basketball team is off to a strong start at the beginning of its 2009-10 campaign. Thursday night they battled borough rival Brooklyn College, and despite being down by three at the half, chipped away and eventually won 72-63 in the non-conference tilt.
Sophomore Margaux PIckell led the Jays with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while sophomore Kristin Leitheuser added 16 points and eight boards. Freshmen Shelby Bruns rounded out the leaders with 13 points and six rebounds.

Jays kick off season with win over Medgar Evers
Buckner leads the way with 19 points
Brooklyn, NY - Rookie head coach Josh Washington didn't have to wait long for win number one in his collegiate coaching career. In his debut, his Jays soared to an 89-83 victory over Brooklyn borough rival Medgar Evers, in a non-conference match Tuesday night.
The Jays, who trailed at halftime 45-41, were led by 6'7" junior forward, Jason Buckner (Littleton, CO / Dakota Ridge HS) with 19 points. Freshmen Myles Hinchcliffe (Flower Mound, TX / Flower Mound HS) added 15, while junior Shawn McCauley (Brooklyn, NY / Xavierian HS) chipped in 12 points.

Poly falls to NYU in NCAA First Round
Violets overmatch Jays 3-0
Manhattan, NY - The NYU-Poly women's volleyball team knew they had to bring their A game, as they squared off against New York University in the NCAA Tournament First Round Thursday night at the Cole Center. Unfortunately, for Poly, NYU brought their A game, as well, and the end result was a 25-15, 25-12, 25-14, three set victory for the Violets.
The Jays fell behind in both the first and second matches and never held the lead in either set. But, in the third set, Poly jumped out to a 8-6 lead, before watching NYU roll off a 17-6 run, including 15 of the final 17 points to seal the game and the match. NYU advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face Christopher Newport (VA) who defeated Steven's Tech, 3-2, in the earlier match.
Meredith Shipman and Victoria Kalvert each had six kills for Poly. Jacqueline Johnson led with 15 assists, while Shipman and Corey Loupee each had seven digs. The Jays end their season at 25-10, while NYU improves to 29-9 overall. Seniors Johnson and Colette Corrica both played in their final match for Poly.

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Skyline Honors
Kalvert named Player of the Year; Loupee Rookie of the Year
Clifton Park, NY - The NYU-Poly women's volleyball team was honored for it's outstanding, undefeated season in the Skyline Conference by sweeping the big awards and picking up two First-Team and one Second-Team All Conference nods. The Jays finished 9-0 in the regular season and won the Skyline Championships, defeating Sage Colleges in five sets. They lost to NYU in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament 3-0.
Sophomore middle blocker Victoria Kalvert (Missouri City, TX / Elkins HS) was selected as the Skyline Conference Player of the Year. Kalvert, who earned Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman last season, ranked in the top-10 in the conference in four statistical categories this season. She ranked second in hitting percentage (.304), third in kills per set (2.75), fifth in blocks per set (0.61), and tenth in service aces per set (0.49). Kalvert was a two-time selection as Skyline Conference Player of the Week this season while helping the Fighting Blue Jays to a program-best 25-9 overall record and a first-ever NCAA Tournament bid.
Freshman middle blocker/right side Corey Loupee was selected Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year. Loupee is the third straight NYU-Poly player to earn Rookie of the Year honors, following teammates Victoria Kalvert (2008) and Meredith Shipman (2007). Loupee, who hit .254, ranked third on the team in kills per set (2.16), led the team and ranked third in the conference in service aces per set (0.66), and ranked second on the team in blocks per set (0.41). She earned Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week honors on three occasions this season.
Junior outside hitter Meredith Shipman was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the Skyline Conference women’s volleyball tournament as she led the Fighting Blue Jays to their first Skyline title and first NCAA Tournament bid in any sport. Shipman averaged 4.88 kills per set while hitting .473 (39-4-74) in the twomatches. In the championship against Sage, she had 25 kills and just three errors. Her biggest kills came in the deciding fifth set with the NYU-Poly trailing 14-11 and facing three match points. The Fighting Blue Jays scored three straight points and six of the next seven to rally for the conference championship. Shipman was also selected to the First-Team All Conference.
Freshmen setter Nicole Breitbart (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood HS) was named to 2nd Team All-Conference. She was fourth in the conference with 695 total assists

Clifton Park, NY - In an acknowledgment of the outstanding season the men's soccer team had in 2009, the Skyline Conference coaches selected three Jays as All-Conference players. Sophomore Joe Gabor (Warwick, NY / Warwick HS) was selected to the first-team on defense. He becomes the first Poly men's soccer player to receive a first-team nod. Freshmen center-mid Allen Rohr (Northridge, CA / Granada Hills Charter) was selected to the 2nd team, along with senior forward Volkan Turgut (Rochester, NY / Bishop Kearney).
Gabor, a captain, anchored a defense that improved from 50 goals allowed in 2008 to 36 this season. He was instrumental in the team posting six shutouts and holding their opponents to just over 1.5 goals per contest. He was second on the team in points (9) and tied for first in goals (4).
Rohr, who started all 21 games for the Jays, led the team and finished tied for eighth in the conference in assists (5), two of which were game winners. He also recorded the game winning goal against Berkeley College. Rohr also drew the game-winning PK in the conference quarterfinals against Maritime.
Turgut finished tied for first in goals scored (4) on the team and was ninth in the conference for points (in conference games ) with eight. He ended up tied for fifth in goals scored in conference games with four.
Kalin, who finished his third season as head coach, was selected as the Coach of the Year. After being picked ninth in the Skyline Conference preseason poll, NYU-Poly finished in fourth place, earning the school’s first postseason tournament berth. The Fighting Blue Jays made the most of their opportunity with a 1-0 win over SUNY Maritime in the quarterfinals of the Skyline tournament. NYU-Poly recorded one of the top turnarounds in Division III this season. After going 2-13-4 in 2008, NYU-Poly went 10-10-1 this season with a roster consisting of primarily freshmen and sophomores.

Jays drop a pair of weekend matches
Mount Saint Mary and CSI post wins over Poly
Staten Island, NY - The Fighting Blue Jays women's tennis fell to 3-7 on the season after falling 9-0 to Mount Saint Mary and 7-2 to College of Staten Island over the weekend. The Jays were overcome by a solid Blue Knights squad which cruised to the Skyline Conference win. On Sunday, the Dolphins out manuervered the Jays in a non-conference swing. It was a much closer match than the score indictaed as CSI posted several wins that could have gone the other way.

Cross Country competes at Brooklyn Invitational
Hicks takes 6th place
Bronx, NY - The NYU-Poly Cross Country team was short in numbers this weekend but was strong in effort and support. But this did not stop senior Kyle Hicks (New York, NY / Newport HS) from reaching Honor Roll in the Skyline Conference while improving his season best time by almost a minute from 32:25 to 31:32; as he is aims at repeating his 1st team conference finish last year in the Skyline championships. Freshman Devin Lovell (Cranberry, PA / Seneca Valley HS) also improved his time from 39:18 to 39:01. Freshmen Todd Selby (Norwell, MA / Norwell HS) held a steady pace finishig in 41:21.

Men's Golf places 3rd at Farmingdale State Invitational
Rajkaruna leads Poly with 11th place finish
Farmingdale, NY - The NYU-Poly men's golf team played its first match of the season and had a solid showing, placing 3rd out of six teams at the Farmingdale State Invitational on Friday. Keith Rajkaruna led Poly, finishing tied for 11th, while Rob O'Connor was right behind at 13th.

NYU-POLY is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association – more commonly known as the NCAA – and is a Division III member. Our athletes are true amateurs, who compete because they love their sport.
The Fighting Blue Jays compete in the Skyline Conference, a group of 11 Division III institutions, which receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships in Men's and Women's Soccer, Women's Volleyball, Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Basketball, Softball, and Baseball. The Skyline's member universities include Yeshiva, Mount Saint Vincent, Mount Saint Mary, Bard, SUNY Maritime, SUNY Old Westbury, Purchase, Sage, St. Joseph's (NY), and Farmingdale State.
NYU-POLY sponsors 8 mens and 8 womens sports including baseball, basketball (M/W), softball, tennis (M/W), soccer (M/W), cross country (M/W), track and field (M/W), volleyball (M/W), lacrosse (W), and judo (M/W).
The home of the Fighting Blue Jays is the Jacobs Gymnasium, located on our Brooklyn campus. Soccer and lacrosse compete at Aviator Sports Complex, a state-of-the-art, sprint turf, lighted field, while our baseball and softball teams compete at their recently upgraded fields at Floyd Bennett Field. Our tennis teams compete at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens.
