Friday Fun: Science & engineering as you’ve never seen it

Nose

Could this unearthly image be of a visitor from another dimension? Or perhaps it’s a newly discovered Georgia O’Keeffe painting? Actually, it’s a unique view up someone’s nose composed from a computed tomography (CT) scan. This fascinating image is one of ten to be honored in the 2007 Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge sponsored by the journal Science and the National Science Foundation.

For the past five years, the Science and Engineering Visualization Contest has recognized the accomplishments of gifted scientists whose cutting edge efforts to visualize data incite understanding and inspiration. Winners are chosen in four categories: photography, informational graphics, interactive media, and noninteractive media.
