Each series consists of electronic books that synthesize an important research or development topic, authored by an expert contributor to the field.  The e-books (or “lectures” as they are called)  range from 50-275 pages and are available in PDF format.  They provide students and researchers a convenient way to get a better understanding of an area of interest.

The range of content level in Synthesis is intended to be fairly broad, from state-of-the-art research overviews to presentations appropriate for undergraduates or professionals seeking a review.  To find out more about the collection, read this detailed review.

The online-only journal is now accepting submissions for publication.

The journal seeks to provide a platform for novel ideas in database research surrounding biological information and will reportedly cover only open-access databases.

As described on the Oxford Journals web site:

Huge volumes of primary data are currently archived in numerous open-access databases, and with new generation technologies becoming more common in laboratories, large datasets will become even more prevalent than today. The archiving, curation, analysis and understanding of all of this data is a challenge.

arXiv was developed in 1991 and is the oldest online article repository in existence. Researchers upload their own articles to arXiv, and they are usually made available to the public the next day. A team of 113 volunteer moderators from around the world screen submissions and recommend whether they should be included in the repository.

arXiv has long stood at the forefront of the open-access movement and served as the model for many other initiatives, including the National Institute of Health’s PubMedCentral. It is currently ranked the No. 1 repository in the world by the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

Science Direct’s extensive full text collection covers authoritative titles from the core scientific literature.  But don’t let the name mislead you - in addition to Life, Health, Physical  and Materials Sciences, this database also covers Engineering, Mathematics, Management, and Arts & Humanities.  Many of the journals include coverage back to 1995.

To get the most out of Science Direct, take advantage of the User Guides and Tutorials and the tips on Searching Options.

SpringerLink offers journals and books in a variety of disciplines such as biomedicine, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, computer science, humanities, and economics. Free access to tables of contents, detailed abstracts and editorial background are available for every publication, and full text is offered for many.

Take a moment to run a couple searches in SpringerLink and see how easy it is to narrow your results to fit your criteria. You can also sign up for alerts on the latest titles in your field.
