Entries
Initial entries - Initial entries should outline and serve as an introduction to the idea/product/service.

  1. Initial entries will be reviewed and scored based on the following criteria:
  2. Originality and the innovative, inventive, or entrepreneurial nature of the idea/product/service
  3. Impact on society (local, national, global)
  4. Commercialization Possibilities

Final submissions – Semi-finalists will be asked to submit Final submissions that are a comprehensive description of the idea/product/service based on the format outlined below. Professionalism of the final submission will also be considered.

Eligibility
All students submitting an entry must:

  • Be a full-time student in good academic standing.
  • Students are permitted to submit multiple entries.
  • If a team enters and wins, then the members of the team will split the award accordingly.
  • Semi-Finalists must:
    • Meet with the Director of the BEST Center
    • Attend all required meetings and least 1 workshop/lecture


Judging Criteria and Guidelines
The recipients will be awarded on originality and the innovative, inventive, or entrepreneurial nature of the idea/product/service which could lead to the development of a patentable or marketable idea/product/service. Judges will be from various sources in business, alumni, and community people with an expertise or interest in innovative, inventive or entrepreneurial endeavors.

Semi-finalists will have the opportunity to have contact with our “Inno/Vention Consultants” for advice and suggestions. This is to help guide the entrants with questions they need to think about for a successful submission.

The criteria for evaluation include:

  • The originality, innovative, inventive, and entrepreneurial nature of the idea/product/service.
    • Use of knowledge obtained from coursework that exhibits the quality and depth of understanding of the technical, scientific, and business foundations of the submission.
    • Submissions should not be current course-related research projects.
  • Impact on society (local, national, global).
  • Commercialization Possibilities
    • The  analysis and understanding of how the idea evolved to meet the needs of potential customers; the ability to manufacture or deliver the idea/product/service; economics of production and sale of the idea; and the competitive analysis of the idea/product/service. (The eventual profitability of the submission will not be used as a criterion).

  4. Show the technical, scientific, and business foundations of the submission.


III - Impact on society (local, national, global) (max 1 page)

  1. How will this idea enhance or provide a service to society
  2. Who are the targeted people/markets?

               
IV - Commercialization Possibilities (max 1 page)

  1. Research the competitive analysis of the idea/product/service
  2. What is the market need of the idea/product?
  3. Worth - do customers see the worth in the idea/product?
  4. The ability to manufacture or deliver the idea/product/service
  5. How will customer use the idea?
  6. Resources needed to manufacture?
  7. Economics of production and sale of the idea
  8. How long will it take to develop?
  9. What will the cost be to develop?
  10. How will it be marketed?
  11. (The eventual profitability of the submission will not be used as a criterion).
