Position Urban Systems Leader - Tenure-Track Faculty Position

Education & Experience

Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) seeks an accomplished and respected individual to lead its new Urban Systems strategic initiative. This initiative aims to transform approaches to urban systems by creating new analytical paradigms which recognize the complexity and connections of critical infrastructure components and generate interdisciplinary solutions to improve their functioning. The recent affiliation between New York University and Polytechnic Institute has positioned NYU-Poly for exceptional growth. The Urban Systems initiative was created as part of NYU-Poly’s growth and development phase and its recent heightened focus in infusing i2e- invention, innovation and entrepreneurship- throughout its curriculum and programming.

A PhD or equivalent in an engineering or scientific discipline is mandatory. The selected candidate will hold a tenure-track faculty position in an existing department but will be expected to effectively collaborate across traditional departmental boundaries and with NYU departments, as well as to forge partnerships with corporations, government agencies, think tanks, and other universities. As such, demonstrated experience in and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration within and/or outside of academia is highly desirable.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests, and names and contact information for three references to Search Committee: Urban Systems at facultysearch@poly.edu

Responsibilities

The candidate selected to lead this effort will work to identify the next wave of technological improvements and connectivity specifically targeted to cities in order to address major global issues. The candidate will work with expert faculty from across NYU-Poly and schools of NYU, along with leaders in industry, policy and government, to devise creative solutions to the urban systems challenges faced by the city of New York and cities throughout the world. This exciting opportunity will allow candidates wide discretion in shaping the initiative, including having the opportunity to recruit additional faculty to engage in complementary research initiatives. The ideal candidate also will possess outstanding scholarly and professional qualifications in an engineering discipline and may have a background in either academia or an industrial sector.
