Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Class of 2010
My name is Evelyn Coyure. I am a freshman at Polytechnic Institute of NYU. I am currently enrolled in the BS/MS Honors program pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering. My area of interest is robotics. I created my first robot when I was in high school. This robot won a regional medal in a competition called Science Olympiads. I was also a referee for FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC challenges high school students to build different robots every year. Because of these competitions, I have experience creating circuits in digital trainers, and a background in controls and systems. In my first semester in Polytechnic Institute of NYU, I created an autonomous underwater vehicle.
During high school I had the enormous task of balancing academic, extracurricular activities, community service and home-related obligations. However, I didn't allow one to affect the other. I was the vice-president of the Interact Club and the president of Mundos Club. Both clubs do community service. We helped Pronto, girls in Iraq, and people who were affected by the tsunami. Nevertheless, these clubs were not the only ones in which I was involved. I also participated in the Math League, Mentathalon and Science Olympiads, which are academic clubs that compete with local school districts. I have numerous awards from math competitions, and I am a regional finalist in the competition Robot Ramble. I have also participated in Science Olympiads States Competition. In that competition, I participated in Forensics, Robot Ramble, Health Science and Designer Genes. Furthermore, I like to interact with other people of my age. It is for this reason that I have participated in the Pancake Run and in Cancer Awareness Walks, I was a member of the Honor Society, I was a staff writer of Pow Pow (school newspaper) and I was a volunteer tutor for student who didn't understand mathematics or chemistry.
My life in Polytechnic Institute of NYU is also very active. I am a math tutor in the Polytechnic Tutoring Center, I am a Resident Assistant (RA) in Othmer Residence Hall, I am the secretary of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, I am a member of Polybots (Robotics Club) and a member of the Programming Team. Even though I am still a freshman, I have received numerous offers of internships with companies such as General Motors, Procter and Gamble, John Deere, Fisher Price, Goldman Sachs, and NASA for this summer.
The Honors College has provided me the necessary guidance throughout this first year in my career path. Being a part of the Honors College helps you to register for classes before everybody else, and it provides you with Honors classes which enrich your knowledge with real-life situations. However, the Honors College not only provides academic advantages, but offers social advantages too. It organizes different trips as a kind of award for getting a high GPA. So far this year, the Honors College has provided skiing trips, water rafting trips and a Six Flags Trip. I really encourage you to be part of the Honors College because it will empower and support you throughout your academic career.
