Master of Science in Financial Engineering
General Information
Financial Engineering (FE) is as an important profession within the financial services industry. Financial Engineering is built on analytical foundations, and the discipline also draws heavily upon the theoretical foundations of modern finance. Financial Engineers require a broad but specific knowledge of financial instruments and markets, accounting and tax rules, and information technology.
Financial Engineering activities are generally concentrated in the financial services industry. Increasingly, however, a demand for competent Financial Engineers is also found in treasury departments of non-financial corporations and in public institutions. On the capital markets side, financial engineers are responsible for structuring and marketing complex financial products, developing sophisticated trading and risk management strategies, and engineering solutions for a wide variety of complex financial problems faced by corporations, state and local governments, international agencies, and sovereign governments. On the financial technology side, financial engineers interface between the capital market personnel, the operations personnel, and the technologists responsible for supplying the full range of technological support that is vital to the proper functioning of a modern financial marketplace. The effective management of these interfaces as a strategic partner is essential to maintain competitiveness in global markets.
Polytechnic Institute of NYU’s Master of Science in Financial Engineering is in the Department of Finance and Risk Engineering and has been designed to provide the skills required to operate at the cutting-edge in today’s financial services industry. Separate tracks make it possible to pursue careers in capital markets, financial technology or computational finance. The program is rigorous, demanding, and selective. Graduates of the Financial Markets and Corporate Finance Track are expected to seek positions in financial risk management groups, on trading and arbitrage desks, in product structuring groups, in derivatives groups, in investment banking departments, in asset management firms and in the information technology firms that support the trading operations of financial institutions. Graduates of the Financial Information Services and Technology Track are best viewed as information technologists who are actively involved in the development and implementation of the entire spectrum of software applications, databases and networks used in modern financial services firms. Graduates of the Computational Finance Track are expected to perform academic or applied business research in cutting-edge investment science and finance and will be qualified to continue their education in Ph.D. programs. Graduates are expected to seek positions in commercial banks, investment banks, thrifts, insurance companies, investment companies, pension funds, finance companies, consulting firms, energy marketing firms, accounting firms with consultancy practices, and so forth.
Polytechnic’s Master of Science in Financial Engineering is a 36-credit program that brings together three key areas: finance and related business disciplines, quantitative analysis (mathematics and statistics), and information technology (telecommunications and computer science). Polytechnic has long been recognized as a leader in both advanced mathematics and in information technology. Now, through its FE Program and associated research and curriculum development, Polytechnic has positioned itself to be a leader in the financial technology on which financial institutions increasingly depend for their revenue streams. The financial component of the program has been further strengthened by developing a versatile faculty. This faculty consists of leading financial market practitioners from major financial services firms and esteemed researchers in the financial engineering field. The adjunct faculty works closely with Polytechnic’s full-time faculty. The Financial Engineering program was the first to be certified by the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE). This recognition is a strong indication of the relevance and comprehensiveness of the Program.
The Financial Engineering Program offers students a Financial Lab with the latest in financial software and data sets which provide students with the experience of a dynamic financial markets trading and analytics environment which complements and enhances the overall learning. At both the Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses, students have access to our state-of-the-art Wireless Local Area Network. The FE Program provides anytime/anywhere access to Internet-based trading simulations and sophisticated analytical tools extending the learning experience far beyond the classroom.
