Robert Metcalfe is a technology pioneer and co-inventor of Ethernet, a standard for connecting computers over short distances. He founded 3Com Corporation, a billion-dollar networking company in 1979 and was CEO of IDG’s InfoWorld Publishing Company in 1990. Dr. Metcalfe joined Polaris Venture Partners in 2001 and became a general partner in 2006.

He is the recipient of the IEEE Medal of Honor and the National Medal of Technology “for leadership in the invention, standardization and commercialization of Ethernet.” He is also the author of Packet Communication, Internet Collapses and Other InfoWorld Punditry and Beyond Calculation: The Next 50 Years of Computing.

Dr. Metcalfe graduated from MIT in 1969 with dual degrees, one in electrical engineering and the other in management from the Sloan School. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in applied mathematics from Harvard University in 1970 and 1973, respectively.
