RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

 

SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS FOR COLLEGE JUNIORS IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, COMPUTER ENGINEERING, AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

The Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer and Information Science at Polytechnic Institute of NYU are offering a small number of Special Grants to college juniors who would like to gain experience in advanced research this summer. This summer research program is sponsored by faculty research grants awarded by the National Science Foundation, other government agencies, and alumni donations.

The research areas are: telecommunications, wireless communications, digital signal and image processing, image analysis and understanding, cyber-security, and VHDL.

Stipends will be $440 per week and will be awarded for an eleven-week period from May 27, 2008 through August 8, 2008.

ELIGIBILITY: The program is open to full-time college students who will have completed their Junior year by June 2008, and who expect to obtain their bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, physics or mathematics during 2009. In exceptional cases, undergraduates of other classes may be considered, but first preference is given to Juniors. Women and minority students are particularly encouraged to apply.

STIPENDS AND DATES: Students will earn $440 per week, preferably for the eleven-week period from May 27 to August 8. Alternate periods or shorter periods may be possible.

LOCATION AND HOUSING: The research projects will be conducted at the main campus in downtown Brooklyn. Some dormitory facilities will be available at Brooklyn. Details can be obtained from Prof. F. Cassara (631-755-4360).

PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION OF RESULTS: Publication of significant results in the scientific literature is strongly encouraged and facilities for preparing manuscripts will be available.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Applicants should provide the following:
  • Basic personal information, as outlined on the enclosed application form.
  • Two letters of recommendation, which the applicant should ask referees to send directly to Prof. F. Cassara.
  • A transcript of college grades.
  • A resume of any previous scientific or technological experience. Relevant hobbies, previous jobs, special lab courses or projects at college, science fair prizes, and the like should be mentioned. The applicant should pick two of the projects described below in which he or she would like to participate and explain why those were chosen. An applicant with some different project in mind, but related to one of those described below, should mention this also. The whole resume and discussion should by typed and be no longer than two pages.
