MASTER OF SCIENCE TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORKS (MSTN)
ADMISSIONS
For admission to an M.S. program, the applicant must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a grade point average indicative of success in graduate study. Admission to:
- Computer Engineering....
- Electrical Engineering program requires a B.S. in electrical engineering.
- Electrophysics program requires a B.S. in electrical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
- System Engineering program requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, or computer science.
- Telecommunications Networks program requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering.
Students lacking some background may qualify for admission by taking specified deficiency courses. Students may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. programs with a bachelor's degree or with a master's degree. Those entering with a bachelor's will ordinarily satisfy the requirements for the M.S. on the way to the Ph.D. Students receiving a master's in Systems Engineering or Electrophysics may go on for a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
Applicants should submit credentials as early as possible. Deadlines are:
- July 1 for September registration
- November 1 for January registration
- May 1 for the summer session, although late admission is possible
- April 1 for financial aid
Students who have completed graduate work at other schools may transfer up to 9 units towards the MS degree under certain restrictions listed in the catalog. Application for such transfer should be made in writing to the Secretary of the ECE Graduate Office no earlier than July of the year prior to intended graduation. Credit will be allowed only for courses in which honor grades were received, and only when the student's record at the Polytechnic is a B average (or better) in all graduate courses. Note that the grades associated with transferred courses are not included in calculating the GPA needed to earn an MS degree.
Transferred courses may not be used to satisfy the core-course (item A) MS requirements for EE, COMPE, TN, EP or SE. However, with adviser approval, a student who has taken a core course at another university may use the grade in an appropriate follow on course taken at Polytechnic in order to satisfy the core/sequence GPA requirement. This exception is limited to one core course.
