COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Graduate courses in Electrical and Computer engineering are offered on each campus on a regular basis, annually or in two-year or three-year cycles. Consult the Graduate Student Manual for these scheduling cycles as well as for information about day offerings and about the summer program. The electrical and computer engineering graduate mailing, sent out to continuing students prior to each registration, contains the latest information on selected topics course offerings, curriculum and course revisions.

Course number system:

Each graduate course offered in the ECE Department has a prefix of EL, followed by four digits.

The first digit represents the level:
5 -- entry level graduate courses,  often taken by senior students too
6 -- first-year graduate level
7, 8 -- advanced courses
9 -- special topics courses and independent study

The second digit defines the academic area:
0 -- wireless communications
1 -- signal processing
2 -- control
3 -- communication theory and probability
4 -- electronics and VLSI
5 -- optics
6 -- power electronics and systems
7 -- electrophysics
8 -- biomedical

The fourth digit indicates the number of credits:
Most courses end with 3 indicating 3 credits. Courses ending with 1 actually indicate 1.5 credits. Courses ending with x indicate variable credit courses that can be taken in multiple semesters and each with a desired number of credits. But students are encouraged to register in multiple of 1.5 credits in each semester. These are the cases with MS thesis (EL997x) and Ph.D dissertation (EL999x) courses.

Courses in selected topics bearing the same numbers may be repeated for credit provided the topics are different, subject to adviser's approval.
