In MetroTech Center at the heart of downtown Brooklyn, hardly a few minutes by car or subway from the financial center of New York, City Hall and the World Trade Center site in Manhattan, is Polytechnic Institute of New York University. An unprecedented revitalization of the area surrounding Polytechnic is clearly visible in the Marriott Hotel and the newly opened family and criminal courts building on Jay Street, the residential and commercial development underway on Flatbush Avenue stretching from the foot of the Manhattan Bridge, past Junior’s (think cheesecake) to the site of the soon to be Barclay’s Center arena, future home of the Nets basketball franchise, and the residential, commercial and office development that will continue along Atlantic Avenue. Polytechnic is undergoing a similar transformation as it turns the page to a new chapter in its history as part of New York University.
On the fourth floor of Rogers Hall, constructed in the early 1920’s as a factory to manufacture razor blades, is the Department of Civil Engineering and the Center for Construction Management Technology – the home of Polytechnic Institute’s Construction Management program.
The Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Construction Management programs were created in response to the continuing demand for qualified construction professionals. Polytechnic also offers two graduate certificate programs in construction management, and all credits earned in these certificate programs can be applied to a master’s degree.
Construction engineering and management has long been a part of the civil engineering curriculum at Polytechnic. The establishment of separate degree programs in construction management provides an opportunity for individuals who have an interest in some broader aspects of the construction process to further their education and professional development in construction. While many of today’s construction management professionals have come up through the ranks of civil and other engineering disciplines, the graduate construction management program also affords an opportunity for those with other backgrounds who have found their way into the construction industry to further their studies in construction.
Classes are held primarily at the Brooklyn campus; however, some are offered at a site in downtown Manhattan and most recently at the Westchester campus in Hawthorne, New York.
