The Department of Computer and Information Science offers a strong undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Our program provides students with a broad and rigorous foundation in Computer Science. In addition, students choose from a large set of challenging advanced courses on topics such as databases, networking, computer graphics, computer and network security, software engineering, distributed systems, web technology, plus many others. Strong students may also apply for participation in the Honors College and Accelerated BS/MS Programs at Polytechnic.

Students in the department have access to a wide variety of computer equipment, including an extensive network of Sun workstations and Intel-based machines. In addition, there are specialized instructional and research labs for database systems, parallel and distributed computing, security, software engineering, wireless networks, computer graphics, vision and image processing, and web search technology, which are used in advanced courses and research projects.

Students can also pursue independent study and research with faculty members that are nationally and internationally recognized in their fields. In addition to significant research programs in Databases, Algorithms, Software Engineering, Networks, and Visual Information Processing, the department has particular strengths in the Computer Security area. Polytechnic was among the first institutions nationwide recognized as a Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency, and students taking a set of approved course can qualify for NSA Information Systems Security Certification. Research and education programs in the department are supported by over $3 million of annual outside funding from government agencies, industry, and foundations.
