Bachelor of Science: BIOMOLECULAR SCIENCE
USEFUL INFORMATION
Careers
In addition to medical and health professional programs graduates enter medical research, careers in public health, and enter companies that specialize in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Students will have the requisite knowledge to continue their education in MS and PhD programs in the medical sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, or biomedical engineering.
The Faculty
POLY’s Science faculty have won numerous prestigious honors and are recognized as leaders within the international community. Some examples include Professors Eli Pearce (recent past President of the American Chemical Society), Richard Gross (winner of a Presidential Award for his work in developing safe biological routes to chemicals and polymers), Mark Green (winner of the 2005 award from the Japanese Polymer Society), and Bruce Garetz (discovery of "polarization switching" chosen by C&E News as one of its "Chemistry Highlights of 2002".
Internships
Poly’s strong research presence, work with leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and alliance with SUNY Downstate Medical School give our students a wide range of opportunities to participate in various internships.
Research Opportunities
Fundamental areas of research include: Proteins for therapeutics, DNA chips, protein engineering to redesign catalytic proteins, bio-detection, medicinal chemistry, biocatalytic transformations in modern organic chemistry, engineered surfaces, nanoprobes of cells and proteins, drug delivery, polymers in medicine, virus detection and molecular analysis, polymer crystallization, and chiral recognition. NYU-Poly houses the Polymer Research Institute, a leader in synthesis, characterization, structure, processing, properties, and applications of polymeric materials.
Leading the Technology Marketplace
Polytechnic Universities Science faculty has a long tradition of excellence in scientific innovation and a reputation in their commitment to developing students to maximize their potential. POLY offers students complete and multi-faceted facilities that you would expect from a leading internationally renowned institution. Laboratories are modern and well-equipped, with resources in the fields of genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, surface analysis, and computational chemistry. Undergraduate projects often lead to publication in prestigious journals.
Students
Students in the Biomolecular Science program are well-rounded, industrious, creative, and technologically minded. They come to NYU-Poly to work in close contact with distinguished science and technology faculty. They understand that a BS in Biomolecular Science will broaden their academic experience and potential for future growth. Biomolecular Science graduates are uniquely prepared to enter medical school or they directed their studies to position them for success in a wide range of graduate programs or to directly enter the job market.
