SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Polytechnic Institute of NYU are proud to announce their new joint PhD Program in Biomedical Engineering - the latest collaboration of the two campuses and an unparalleled opportunity for world class education and research.

According to the February, 2004, projections by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of biomedical engineering jobs will climb almost twice as fast as the overall average, making a 26% gain by the year 2012.

The PhD Biomedical Engineering (BME) program accommodates students from diverse academic backgrounds by offering three entry-level pathways that ensure a solid foundation in both biology and engineering.

At this time, advanced-level students select one from the following two interdisciplinary thesis tracks:

In the future, additional tracks may be added to the program. The tracks currently offered reflect areas of research in which the two institutions have been strong for many years. Students receive broad training, including opportunities for exposure to various potential career paths through laboratory rotations at industrial sites.

Also, students enrolled in SUNY Downstate's MD/PhD Program can now qualify for their thesis research in Biomedical Engineering.
