Among the companies at 137 Varick Street are 10 cleantech companies of the New York Accelerator for a Clean and Renewable Economy (NYC ACRE). Another 8 have graduated. Since its inception in 2009, NYC ACRE startups have raised more than $22 million in capital and created 100 full-time jobs.
NYC ACRE is New York City’s first and preeminent cleantech incubator, seeded by a four-year, $1.5 million grant from NYSERDA and operated by Polytechnic Institute of New York University. Partners include the New York City Investment Fund, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, NYU, Columbia University and Pratt Institute.
In addition to its support of incubator companies, NYC ACRE grows an ecosystem of entrepreneurs, international companies and innovative local businesses that provide solutions to climate and energy issues. NYC ACRE’s goals include advancing the city as a role model for a low carbon future and growing the cleantech/renewable energy sector and creating technology jobs in New York City.

The DUMBO Incubator opened in January 2012 under the sponsorship of the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Two Trees Management. It is operated by NYU-Poly and fosters digital media, mobile and digital gaming startups. It provides a locus in DUMBO for programming and seminars aimed at the growing local tech community.
