The Department of Athletics and Recreation at Polytechnic Institute of NYU is an integral program of the institution and exists to complement the central University mission of teaching and learning. Competitive athletic programs contribute significantly to the teaching and development of students, and all University athletics programs are designed to be in harmony with the essential educational objectives of the institution. Through a dedicated commitment to academics, a competitive athletic program, and integrity in all areas, the student-athletes, coaches, and staff strive to bring credit and recognition to Polytechnic Institute of NYU.
Excellence in the fields of academics and athletics should be viewed as mutually beneficial. The University seeks to create a community of scholarship in which the activities of its members are consistent with the highest standards of knowledge and practice in their disciplines. The athletics program will reflect this commitment to ‘highest standards’ and shares the responsibility of achieving the goals of the University. The ultimate objective of the athletic department is to integrate academic and athletic experiences successfully. The success of the athletic program is not measured solely by wins and losses. Rather, success in intercollegiate athletics at Polytechnic is inextricably linked to the educational mission of the University, especially with regard to the academic and personal development of student-athletes and the institution’s commitment to honoring the highest standards of amateur competition. The athletics program provides significant contributions to the University by enhancing loyalty to the alma mater, strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of alumni, fostering a strong sense of community (in and out of the NYU-Poly family), and serving as a positive public relations tool for the university.
The activities of the athletics program provide an environment in which students, coaches, faculty, staff and administrators jointly assume the responsibility for the success on and off the field of play. The athletics program embraces the concept that student-athletes are first and foremost students -- possessing academic goals, personal interests, and vocational ambitions not unlike those of any other student. The athletics program complements other University programs by enhancing the educational, social, career and athletic opportunities of the students who participate in athletics. This environment also fosters a commitment to high standards of personal and professional conduct by all members of the athletic community manifested in the highest level of sportsmanship. Student-athletes are expected to benefit from the educational, professional, and cultural advantages of a university located in New York City. For all athletic pursuits, whether they are at the varsity, club, intramural, or recreational level, the Athletic Department strives to provide a rewarding experience for all its constituents. The Department conducts its activities in ways that promote sportsmanship, teamwork, camaraderie, a commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and equitable opportunity for all students and staff. The concern of the Athletic Department for nurturing the well-being of its student-athletes, therefore, is in keeping with the University’s reputation for excellence and integrity.
