Academic Achievement
The student-athlete concept is the guiding principle of Polytechnic Institute of NYU’s participation in Division III athletics. The University’s goal is for student-athletes to receive a high-quality experience both in the classroom and on the playing field. A truly
effective athletic program produces student-athletes who succeed in their academic work as well as in their chosen sport and whose careers after graduation are a tribute both to them and the university. The Department will work with appropriate constituencies within the University to insure the proper balance of athletic and academic interests. The University will provide the necessary resources and institute and maintain policies and procedures that will encourage the fullest development of the academic potential of student-athletes.
Winning Programs
Successfully integrating academics with athletics is the Department’s ultimate objective. However, such an objective does not deter the Department from setting the highest athletic goals for itself. Such high standards enrich campus life and increase regional and national visibility of academic programs. The Department will provide an intercollegiate athletics program that seeks competitive excellence with the objective of competing at the highest level.
Exceptional Sportsmanship, Integrity, and Equity
The Athletic Department will act in an ethical and honest manner, dedicated to compliance with all Federal, State, NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations and will develop educational programs for its constituencies to enhance compliance with such regulations. The policies and direction of the Department will encourage good sportsmanship among student-athletes, coaching staff, administration, and the university community.
Contributing to Life Success of Student-Athletes
The Athletic Department strives to develop student-athletes academically and athletically with the total commitment of aiding their efforts to graduate from Polytechnic Institute of NYU and advance to careers that will enable them to be productive members of society. At Polytechnic, athletic competition is an integral part of the education process. The growth and development of student-athletes in all aspects of college life is of primary importance. Athletic participation enhances the intellectual, social, and personal development of student-athletes.
The educational aspects of athletics, which include the opportunity to exercise leadership, to develop the ability to work with others as a team, to accept and appreciate the discipline of sustained practice and training, to realize the value of good sportsmanship and fair play, encourage in their participants a desire for excellence, respect for colleagues, perseverance, and integrity are at least as important as the physical aspects.
Creating Institutional Loyalty and Support
Intercollegiate competition in organized athletics helps to foster an enthusiastic sense of shared allegiance among all parts of the University - students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. For these reasons, the University offers an extensive array of competition opportunities at the varsity intercollegiate, club intercollegiate, and intramural levels, as well as a variety of physical education and recreational programs that allow members of the University community to pursue athletic endeavors that meet their interests and skills.
Through the athletic department, the University seeks to unite students, faculty, staff, and alumni in a common and shared experience.
