The Process and Policies of Credit Transfers

We understand that the process of transferring from one college to another is complex. That’s why we do our best to make sure you have access to all the information you need to make your decision and transition as easy as possible. If you find that you have additional questions after reviewing this, please contact the Office of Admissions, where staff members are available to assist you in every way that they can.

As a transfer student, you should follow the general admissions requirements found here as well as the specific transfer student requirements and guidelines found below. Read our Frequently Asked Questions for answers to your transfer credit questions.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

The transfer credit evaluation process begins once you are officially admitted to NYU-Poly and you have submitted official transcripts from previous institutions to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

What do you need to evaluate my credits?

In addition to official transcripts, you are required to submit your college catalog and course descriptions for any courses under consideration for transfer credit. Course syllabi from the respective institutions where you took those courses may also be required when course descriptions from catalogs are insufficient. The more information you provide the quicker the evaluation process will be.

Materials You Need to Submit for Transfer Credit Evaluation
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Course descriptions
  • Course syllabi (in cases where catalog descriptions are insufficient; we will inform you if they are required for your evaluation)
  • For international transcripts: a WES evaluation (see Foreign Transcript Translation Services section below for contact information)

Send the above list of items to:

Polytechnic Institute of NYU
Wunsch Building
MetroTech Center

Once we receive all of your materials, we will send them to the academic departments for review. A completed transfer credit evaluation will be sent to you once your credits have been fully evaluated.

Credit Evaluation Policies

The following guidelines will be adhered to when evaluating transfer credits:

  • You must receive a C or higher in order for the credits to transfer
  • NYU-Poly does not guarantee that credits earned elsewhere will fully satisfy NYU-Poly course requirements. In some cases you may need to take an additional bridge course or do some additional work at the recommendation of the transfer credit course evaluator in order to fully satisfy our course requirements.
  • The maximum number of transfer credits granted for any particular course can not exceed the number of credits received at your previous institution
  • Academic advisors and faculty have the right to revoke any transfer credit granted for a Polytechnic course the student does not perform at a satisfactory level in the subsequent course at NYU-Poly
  • Applicability of transfer credits granted towards your major graduation requirements is decided by your academic department
  • Foreign language, speech courses, physical education, pre-calculus, trigonometry, and algebra credits are not transferrable
  • Credits earned 8 years or more from your date of attendance will not be accepted
  • If transcripts that have been submitted for evaluation have tentative transfer credit granted for courses that are currently in progress at the other institution, the transfer credit approval is not official until an updated official transcript is received showing that you received a satisfactory grade of C or better
  • Current NYU-Poly students who receive academic department and advisor approval to take particular courses at another institution may transfer these credits. However, before this can be done, you need to provide the transfer credit evaluation office with proof of department and advisor approval, course descriptions, and an official transcript from the other institution.

Student Rights

  • You have the right to a fair and quick assessment of your credits
  • You have the right to 1 appeal of your evaluation. Appeals must be brought to the attention of the transfer credit evaluation officer before the end of your first semester of attendance at NYU-Poly.
  • Your transfer credit evaluation must be completed by the end of your first semester of attendance at NYU-Poly. If you don’t submit external transcripts for evaluation by the end of your first semester of attendance at NYU-Poly, as per the NYU-Poly’s catalog regulations, you do not have the right to expect that these credits will be evaluated at a later date.
  • You have the right to re-take a course at NYU-Poly even though transfer credit has been granted for the Polytechnic course in question. In these cases, credit for the course taken at Polytechnic will replace the transfer credit (i.e.: you cannot receive credit 2 times for the same course).

Student Responsibilities

  • It is your responsibility to provide all the information necessary to have your transcripts fully evaluated
  • It is your responsibility to respond promptly to requests for additional information needed by NYU-Poly
  • You must adhere to all deadlines

Foreign Transcript Translation Services Contact Information

If you attended a post-secondary institution outside the United States, you MUST submit an evaluation of your transcripts from the World Education Service (WES) as well as translated course descriptions or course syllabi. Once we have received the evaluation from WES and course information, we can then review your transfer credits. Without a WES evaluation, there is no guarantee that we will be able to award you transfer credits for your work.
