Sophomore and Junior Year — Get a Head Start

Choosing the right college is a life-changing decision
that requires a lot ofpreparation, so it’s important
to start your research as early as possible.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for the college selection process:
  • Identify your interests and research possible career options
  • If you’re into engineering and techy stuff, check out jets.org
  • Learn as much information as possible about the colleges that interest you
  • Stay focused on your grades and enroll in the appropriate PSAT, SAT and ACT prep courses
  • Take advantage of career-days or career fairs
  • Get involved in extracurricular
    activities,clubs or sports
  • Devise a savings plan for college
  • Visit a few colleges, take campus tours and inquire about overnight programs
  • Look into potential scholarship opportunities and apply “early admission”, as many colleges have scholarship deadlines
  • Have fun! This is an exciting time in your life, so enjoy yourself and try not to get overwhelmed by the selection process

Senior Year — Stay on Track

To find the school that’s the right fit, you need to identify your goals and interests,
as well as think about the places that will offer you the best opportunities to succeed
in your major and after graduation.

Use the following monthly plan as a guide to help you stay on track
during the college selection process:

August to October

It’s time to do the prep work.

  • In October, complete the CSS Profile online to help determine if you are eligible for need-based institutional aid. NYU-Poly's CSS Profile code is 2668.
  • Prepare for the October SATs to maximize your scores
  • Update your résumé so you can use it in your applications
  • Check out the Fall Open House schedules for your top colleges (Contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office or call 1-800-POLYTECH)
  • Work with your guidance counselor to create a list of schools that you will be applying to

November to January

The previous months were about preparation, but now is the time for action. In the winter, send out your college applications.

  • Gather all your materials and apply to the schools on your application list
  • Apply online to NYU-Poly
  • Finalize your application essays—they’re a key component of your application.
  • Do a scholarship search on fastweb.com to help you find resources to assist you in financing your education
  • In January, complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov to help determine your school financial aid packages. NYU-Poly’s FAFSA code is 002796.

February to May

During this time, you will be receiving responses from schools.

  • Review your scholarship and financial aid awards for each school
  • Compare the value of the colleges you are considering, as well as which one is the best fit for you
  • Visit your top schools, ask questions and experience each campus for a final time
  • Take available AP tests, if possible. They will save you time and money in the long run
  • The deadline to enroll at NYU-Poly is May 1st. Good luck!

The Last Steps

Congratulations, by now you have decided on the right college for you! So enjoy your summer, but you may want to consider getting a summer job to help with college expenses and even start shopping for your dorm room.
