International Student Requirements

We are proud to be an academic home to students who hail from all over the globe. Because our commitment to offering a world-class education in engineering, science and technology is matched by a dedication to serving people of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, NYU-Poly attracts many high-caliber students from outside the U.S.

To apply to NYU-Poly, international students must follow the general requirements for applicants in addition to the visa requirements listed below. If after reviewing our web site you find that you still have questions about applying, financial aid, academics, or any other aspect of our instituttion, we encourage you to contact the Office of Admissions, where staff is available to assist you throughout your application process. You can also visit our online Office of International Students and Scholars for information about studying and living in the U.S. as an international student.

Visa Requirements to Study in the US

Most international students will need an F-1 or J-1 visa in order to study in the United States. To qualify for an F-1 or J-1 visa, students must be academically admissible, show proof of English proficiency, and provide evidence of financial support to cover educational and living expenses for their NYU-Poly education.

F-1: This is the designation for a student visa and is the most frequently used visa classification for international students. To obtain an F-1 visa, you will need a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status, also known as an I-20. Your F-1 visa will be sent upon completion of all international student admission requirements.

J-1: This visa classification is normally given to students whose sponsors require it. To obtain a J-1 visa, you will need a Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status, also known as an IAP-66. Your J-1 visa will be sent upon completion of all international student admission requirements.

Once you receive the appropriate form, you should apply for the corresponding visa stamp at the closest U.S. Consulate or Embassy.

Canadian Students

Canadian citizens entering the United States from Canada need only present the I-20 or IAP-66 and evidence of adequate funding for their studies as they enter the U.S.

Please note that once you have entered the United States with an I-20 or IAP-66 issued by NYU-Poly, you are required by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to attend NYU-Poly.
