Summer Research Institute
The Summer Research Institute program provides talented high school students with improvement opportunities in science, engineering and mathematics beyond those normally available through their own high schools. During this seven-week, full-time program, high school students take part in independent research in the University's laboratories under the guidance of outstanding faculty members. The young scientists work with these professors on a one-to-one basis and conduct their research either individually or together with other high school researchers.
Students work as part of a collaborative research group in conjunction with their faculty mentor. They simulate the experiences of professional scientists and conduct their research either individually or together with other high school researchers. This experience prepares students to submit their work to prestigious science, mathematics and technological competitions, and many students continue their research beyond the summer period.
Admission to the Summer Research Institute is very selective, and is determined by the student's scholastic record, evidence of successfully completing science/technology courses, expressed interest in the program, and the strength of recommendations from high school teachers, principals or counselors. Applicants should currently be high school juniors who will begin their senior year after completing the Summer Research Institute, although applications from outstanding sophomores will also be considered.
