To earn a Bachelor of Science in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at NYU-Poly, you must complete 122 credits, distributed by the following requirements:
- General education (40 credits)
- Technology/science (28 credits)
- STS (34 credits)
- Free electives (18 credits)
General Education Requirement (42 Credits)
Humanities and Social Science General Education (8 courses for 24 credits)
18 credits from any of the HuSS clusters, which must include:
- One level 3 HuSS course
- One HuSS writing-intensive course, which is marked by a “W” in the course title
University General Education (4 courses for 16 credits)
One general tech elective
One general math elective
Two general science electives
Technology/Science Requirement (28 credits)
You must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the following group of courses:
Introduction to Engineering (4 credits)
Technology/Science Electives (24 credits)
You must earn 24 credits from any of the following fields (at least 15 of these credits must be from the same field, unless otherwise indicated by minor requirements specific to a given department and approved by the adviser): biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics or physics.
Please note: some students substitute EG 1003 for a different science course, following the practice of the department that regulates their Technology/Science concentration. For instance, students on a premed track often substitute CM 1004 for EG 1003, as is the practice for BMS majors.
STS Requirement (34 credits)
You must pass each of the following with a minimum of a C.
Core (10 credits)
Restricted Electives (24 credits)
8 courses from the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) cluster of Humanities and Social Sciences courses, excluding those taken to fulfill the Core Requirement above. These courses include the STS-prefixed courses as well as those listed under the STS Cluster for the Department of Technology, Culture and Society.
Free Electives (18 credits)
Any combination of courses that adds up to 18 credits fulfills this requirement. Some students use these credits to study a foreign language at NYU, others take additional courses in science at NYU-Poly. Students can also use free electives to take advantage of one of the cross-school minors.
This minor is open to all majors and is composed of 15 credits consisting of:
- One of the core courses in STS (must be taken at NYU-Poly):
- 12 credits satisfied by courses chosen from the STS electives list (1 course must be taken at NYU-Poly)
You may obtain a second major in STS by fulfilling the Technology/Science Requirement for the STS major with the courses from your other major. You may also substitute the STS Cluster Requirement for the 6 General Education HuSS electives beyond the freshman year that are required of all NYU-Poly students. You must also complete the STS Core Requirement in order to earn the double major.
