The academic programs in Integrated Digital Media at NYU-Poly consist of both Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees that look at the field of digital media in a holistic way, as a spectrum of practices that runs the gamut from interaction design to performing arts research to photography, video, sound, and 3-D graphics, to games and human-computer interfaces. Our students are artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs working in extraordinarily fluid industries that reward the creative, the thoughtful, the technical, and the innovative.
The Masters of Science degree in Integrated Digital Media is a 3-semester program that combines high-end production classes in media with research-grade investigation of new tools, techniques, and practices. Students take graduate-level coursework in media studies, media law, and media organization, as well as graduate level production classes in Web Design, Digital Cinema, Digital Photography, Game Design, Sound, and 3D Graphics. Graduate level special topics courses in HCI, Mobile Application Development, Augmented Reality, and other current topics are offered. Students also take courses in other NYU-Poly engineering departments (Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering), as well as at NYU in departments such as Music Technology (Steinhardt) and Interactive Telecommunications (Tisch). Graduate Students in IDM participate fully in research initiatives at the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center (BxmC) and in our partnered initiatives with other programs and schools at NYU-Poly, CUSP, and NYU. Students are expected to produce professional quality studio work in an experimental practice environment, and create a Thesis that brings together their creative and technical skills in digital media to create a fully realized research project around the creative applications of media technology. The Brooklyn Experimental Media Center (BxmC) is the research center for digital media at NYU-Poly. The Brooklyn Experimental Media Center (BxmC) provides an interdisciplinary environment for media research at NYU-Poly, partnering faculty and students from the Integrated Digital Media program with collaborators from NYU-Poly, NYU, Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), New York City, and beyond. Our research combines experimental practices in media arts and engineering, constantly modifying industry-standard technologies and creating new ones. The BxmC has a close relationship with the NYU Poly Small Business Incubator to provide students with opportunities for internships and startup development in the ever-growing NY tech-start up scene.
