How to Calculate Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

 Process:

  1. Write out the course names and credits for each course.
  2. Write grade received/anticipated in each course.
  3. Write the number value for each letter grade (see below)
  4. Multiply grade values by number of credits for each class (called “GPS Points”)
  5. Total GPA points.
  6. Divide total number of GPA points by total number of credits = GPA
 Remember:
  1. If you withdraw from a course, do not count these credits as part of your total credits.
  2. Transfer credits DO NOT count towards your GPA.
  3. If you retake a course you have failed, and pass the second time, only count the credits for taking the course once.
  4. Divide the total GPA points by total credits attempted.

Number Values for Letter Grades:

A = 4.0                        C+ = 2.3                       F = Below 1.0
A- = 3.7                       C = 2.0

     B+ = 3.3                     C- = 1.7
     B = 3.0                       D+ = 1.3
     B- = 2.7                      D =1.0

Example:
      Course
 # Credits
       Grade
    Grade Value
     Grade Value x Credits
           (“GPA Points”)
    MA 1012
        2
           B
           3.0
                  2 x 3 = 6
    EN 1014
        4
           A
           4.0
                  4 x 4 = 16
    CS 1114
        4
           C
           2.0
                  4 x 2 = 8
    CM 1004
        4
           D
           1.0
                  4 x 1 = 4
               Total:                 14                                                                                      34
               GPA            34/14 = 2.4   (Total GPA Points/Total # of Credits)
