The ACADEMIC DISQUALIFICATION APPEAL PROCESS I

FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE ACADEMICALLY DISQUALIFIED WHO WANT TO IMMEDIATELY APPEAL THEIR DISQUALIFICATION

[1] The student should obtain a copy of the "Appeal of Academic Disqualification" form from the Academic Advisement Center in JB 356 or from their academic adviser and follow the steps outlined on the form:

(a) write an essay explaining what caused them to be unsuccessful at Polytechnic

(b) if readmitted to the university, why would they be more academically successful than previously?

(c) meet with their academic adviser to discuss their essay and plan

(d) outline the specific details of their plan if they were to be readmitted

[2] If readmission is recommended by the adviser, the student should make a copy of their Appeal of Academic Disqualification" form and submit it to Michael Campbell, head of the Academic Standing Committee, in JB 356. They should also send their appeal essay by e-mail to Michael Campbell (mcampbel@poly.edu), so that it can be forwarded to the other members of the committee for discussion so that a final decision can be made.

[3] The decision of the Academic Standing Committee regarding readmission will be communicated to the student by e-mail as soon as possible.

[4] If readmitted to the university the student should make an appointment to meet with their departmental adviser in order to discuss and register for classes. Their first semester back they would be on Final Probation and would be limited to registering for a maximum of 14 credits.

[5] Being on Final Probation for their first semester, it is essential that the student "make academic progress" by passing all their classes with a grade of C or better and achieving a semester gpa of at least 2.0. No grades of F, D, I, W or U are permitted except under extraordinary circumstances.

[6] If the student shows academic progress by achieving a 2.0 for the semester their academic status will be reevaluated and, if appropriate, changed to regular probation. If the student fails to make progress they will most likely be re-disqualified.

[2] If the student has taken any courses elsewhere since leaving Polytechnic Institute of NYU, they must submit transcripts of any classes taken at the other university to the Admissions Office and then follow the steps below.

(a) instead of writing the standard essay the disqualified student must write an essay explaining what caused them to be unsuccessful when they attended Polytechnic

(b) they must explain why, if readmitted to the university, they would be more academically successful than previously

(c) outline the specific details of their plan if they were to be readmitted

[3] If readmitted to the university the student should make an appointment to meet with their departmental adviser in order to discuss and register for classes. Their first semester back they would be on Final Probation and would be limited to registering for a maximum of 14 credits.
